“Old John”<\/em> is a famous “folly” at Bradgate Park, Leicester well known to people in the East Midlands. A great place to visit.<\/em> It is built to look like a beer tankard!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Here’s a new recording of a song I have written and recorded about a building on a hill at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, England. It is a strange building (known as a folly) that is built to look like a beer tankard. My friend Al Owens wrote the lyrics and I did the music. It was built as a memorial to a miller who’s name was “Old John”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A FOLLY CALLED OLD JOHN\nLyrics: Al Owens  Music : Kenny Wilson\n\nOld John worked at the windmill \nOn a hill in Bradgate Park.\nJohn was there when the mill collapsed\nIn a storm; the night was dark.\nToo long it took to lift the beam\nThat threatened certain death\nAnd no-one in that howling gale\nHeard John breathe his last breath.\n\nLater on in that same year\nThe owner of the lands\nBuilt a tower from the scattered stones -\nHe and his farmyard hands.\nThey stuck an archway on the side\nOf that folly on the hill.\nFrom the left and right Old John looks quite\nLike a tankard you could fill.\n\nBradgate house has become a ruin -\nCrumbling, ghostly, stark.\nNo Lords or Ladies dwell there now\nAnd the public own the park.\nFootprints of those darker days\nHave faded out and gone.\nYet upon that hill upright and still\nStands a folly called Old John.\n\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
